Show me your Culture: Journal 1

The first journal is designed to get you out there, snapping pictures. The point is to show me your life and artifacts of your culture... That is not to say where your grandparents or parents are from, but YOUR culture and everyday life. Some of the photographers in this post are known for there portrayal of their peers. Sometimes it is brutal like the case of Larry Clark's work which often shows the drug culture of American Youth in the 80's. He went on create the movie Kids in the 90's which was a groundbreaking insite into youth culture. This picture is called Teen Lust and it is by far one of his most tame images.

Another artist, Robert Billingham is more well known for his look at his family life. This image called Liz Shaking her Fist at Ray isn't the most well exposed or beautifull shot but it definately provides insight into his pretty unstable homelife. This is his mother and father. Other artist's like Larry Sultan also used family members as a way to show their culture. In his case his famly was from a rich California suburb. His images from the "Pictures from Home" series express a tense and disconnected relationship between his parents instead. What makes both images so effective is that they show what there life an the people close to them are like not just what they look like. More than you could ever see in a smiling Sears Portait.

What could you take photos of that would explain your life? How will you position them, or will you pose them at all? Your assignment is to hand-in 5 photographs (one good one each day for the next five days). This will likely mean you will need to take several pictures each day and choose your best shots.
